Intrepid Academy at Hale
Throughout history, it has been the most intrepid among us who shape the boundaries of possibility.
Intrepid Academy at Hale will nourish the spirit by moving the classroom into nature, where mental and
physical fortitude are cultivated and practiced.
Intrepid Academy’s challenging, active, and personalized educational experience, combined with its unique outdoor campus as a classroom, will prepare students for academic success, nurture body and mind, and inspire a passion and curiosity for future academic pursuits and a lifetime of health and wellness.
Our program will break down the walls of conventional schools; it will bring students outdoors, and enable them to earn traditional course credits through a nontraditional, active and interdisciplinary educational experience. Students will leave Intrepid Academy with healthier minds and bodies, as well as a determined spirit that will help them become leaders in their schools and communities.
Each semester, Hale will challenge 60 high school juniors to:
Look deep. Intrepid Academy will blend traditional academics with experiential learning projects, pushing students to ask questions, test new ideas, and develop a deeper understanding of the natural world and themselves. Every day will be rich with physical and mental activity.
Be bold. Challenging the boundaries of their comfort zones, Intrepid will break down the walls of the classroom, bringing the students to the experience, rather than bringing stories of experience to them. Hale has a remarkable assortment of natural and man-made challenges across its wilderness campus.
Think big. At the end of their semester, Intrepid students will leave with an expanded sense of the world and their place in it. Every student who comes to Intrepid will take their experience back to their more traditional schools with a new focus on what education and learning can mean for them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where will Intrepid Academy be located? Intrepid Academy will call Hale’s 1,137 acres home. The site provides ample space that will meet the academic, social, emotional, and health needs of Intrepid’s students. This unique campus will blur the line between traditional and outdoor classrooms, and students will spend significant time exploring the natural world every day.
Who will run Intrepid Academy? Intrepid’s staff will consist of core academic teachers, outdoor instructors, and adjunct subject specialists. The school will have a simple leadership structure (one program director will oversee the school’s programming and operations), and all staff will serve multiple roles. We aim to create a healthy environment for students and staff, and believe that staff, too, will benefit from the school’s setting, small size, and relational model.
Why a semester? To put it simply, semester schools 1) provide an enriching and unique opportunity that cannot be provided elsewhere and 2) have lasting impact. According to Mary Dwyer, ninety-seven percent of students who have participated in semester programs say their experience “served as a catalyst for increased maturity,” while 80% indicate their experience “enhanced their interest in academic study.” The unique experience of a semester at Intrepid Academy is designed to produce similar outcomes.
How much will it cost? During the initial pilot phase for Intrepid Academy, all Boston Public School (BPS) students will attend tuition free. BPS support and private philanthropy will cover the expenses.
